Overall, for all sunflower products (seeds, oil and cake), the United Republic of Tanzania has experienced a major surge in exports, moving from US$1 million to over US$70 million within a decade. India is its main export market and absorbs over 80% of its exports. Despite the world market for sunflower products experiencing extraordinary.
Sunflower is one of Tanzania’s major import substitution crops alongside sugar and wheat. The crop and its value chain are the bedrock of the country’s edible oil industry, with its current national demand at just over half a million tonnes. Increasing the availability of improved and hybrid seed varieties is essential to growing sunflower yields among smallholder farmers in Tanzania, a new report published by Farm Africa has shown. In Tanzania, around 6% of the land that is under agricultural production is being used for sunflower production.
By April of every year, the entire landscape surrounding Iringa, Tanzania turns a golden yellow. Below the boulder-covered mountain ridges, endless fields of sunflowers peer over the tasseling maize.
