Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon.

This study aims to unpack the complexities including costs and benefits for smallholders to practice sustainable palm oil production in sub-Saharan Africa. We use the RSPO as an example of how independent smallholder farmers could get certified in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall objective was to understand the challenges and complexities of.
Palm oil (El?isguineensis) is a plant native to the countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea. Extracted from the pulp of the fruit, palm oil is rich in fatty saturated acids, and solid at room temperature. As all vegetable oils, palm oil does not contain cholesterol. Palm oil, with an annual global production of 50 million tons, equating to 39%.

Oil palm production expanded 1.2 million hectares in sub-Saharan Africa since 1990, with expansion accelerating in several heavily forested countries since 2000.
This paper presents a case-study analysis of oil palm expansion in Cameroon, with two goals: 1) to identify which actors are engaged in non-industrial oil palm cultivation (i.e., small- and medium-scale plantations less than 1000 ha); and 2) to determine what type of farms are expanding at the expense of forest.

We examine the association of oil palm production with income and off-farm employment using a farm household survey of independent oil palm producers in Cameroon. Employing different regression techniques and empirical strategies, we find oil palm production to be associated with household income, a finding which is consistent with per capita.
Cameroon is ‘Africa in miniature’ as it is home to 90% of Africa’s ecological systems. A large part of Cameroon is under the Congo basin, which holds over 15% of the world’s remaining tropical forests. In 2019, the crude palm oil (CPO) production in Cameroon was 350,000 MT while the demand is much higher, making Cameroon a net importer of palm oil. To meet the growing demand for palm.

Up to 20 million hectares of new oil palm plantations could be established in this region over the next decade. In Cameroon’s forested zone alone, over 1 million hectares is now being targeted by oil palm companies. This cultivation would generate much-needed development in Africa and increase global food supplies.
Palm oil (PO) producing countries are expanding oil palm cultivated areas to meet growing demands at the expense of tropical forests and the ecosystem services (ES) they provide. Current responses to the growing call for sustainable PO trade are based on environmental impacts such as deforestation, partly because most social impacts have not been studied. These responses are based on.
