In Malaysia, the widely used method to extract palm oil from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) is by wet palm oil milling process (Wu et al., 2010). The unit operations used for extractions are a steriliser, a stripper, a digester, a press machine, a clarifier, a separator, an extractor, and a purification system ( Ehsan et al., 2015 ).
The main products are crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel oil (PKO) at 0.205 ton per ton FFB and 0.054 ton per ton FFB, respectively. The co-products produced from FFB processing consist of 22?24% EFB, 13?16% fiber, 5?6% shell, and 60?70% POME.

A palm oil mill produces crude palm oil and kernels as primary products and biomass as secondary product. The capacity of mills varies between 60-100 tons FFB/h. A typical mill has many operation units as shown in Figure 2. This comprises sterilization, stripping, digestion and pressing, clarification, purification, drying and storage.

The total FFB and crude palm oil (CPO) production for January and December 2010 was 74.5 million tonnes and 15.4 million tonnes, respectively. A total of 3.9 million tonnes of palm kernel oil (PKO) was produced during the same corresponding period. In the case of Indonesia, the industry has grown rapidly with the oil palm plantation expanding.
The traditional cogeneration plant design disregards energy efficiency and ties the palm oil milling process and the cogeneration plant operation together.
